Industrial Membrane Separation Process Technology Integrating "State of the art"  Chemistry and Engineering Ingenuity to Provide Increased Productivity, Reduced Costs and Improved Product Quality.

Whatever the industry, Bristol has the technology and the expertise to custom design and manufacture membranes and complete membrane systems that improve product quality while reducing space, labor and costs.

All of Bristol's filtration technologies utilize "cross-flow" operation. What differentiates "cross-flow" from perpendicular flow of conventional depth filtration is that the process fluid's flow is directed parallel to the membrane's surface at high velocities.

Filtration Replacement Parts

The resulting turbulent flow continuously cleans the membrane surface allowing it to consistently permeate at the highest possible output for any given feed concentration level.

Since there is no conventional filtration "cake" build-up, frequent media replacement is eliminated. Instead, a simple cleaning cycle restores membrane capacity.

Bristol's filtration technologies routinely reduce:

  • Operating costs
  • Downtime
  • Energy requirements
  • Disposal costs

At the same time these technologies will increase:

  • Product quality
  • Product output

Furthermore Bristol's product line will simplify your process scheme by replacing:

  • Centrifugation
  • Decantation
  • Pre-coat filtration

Revenues are boosted by:

  • Lowering energy costs
  • Increased production yields
  • Product enhancement

Filtration Technologies:
Pervaporation

At the heart of this process is Bristol's non-porous membrane which exhibits a high permeation rate for water but does not permeate organic solvents and solvent mixtures. The process can also permeate the organics while excluding water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)
200-1200 psi
RO is a high pressure, energy efficient separation process. RO membranes are designed to concentrate low molecular weight organic materials and salts while allowing water and solvents to pass. Typical operating pressures for a process RO system range from 200 to 800 psi. For example, a seawater RO system could operate as high as 1200 psi.

Nanofiltration (NF)
150-300 psi

NF is similar to RO except that mono-valent ions and very low molecular weight organics will pass. NF technology is being applied to large streams never before considered economically feasible because of the capacity of NF membranes is inherently higher than RO. Applications include de-mineralization, color removal and de-salting.

Ultra filtration (UF)
30-150 psi

UF is simply a low pressure selective fractionation of molecules by size. Depending on the molecular cutoff selected, the UF membrane will concentrate high molecular weight species while allowing dissolved salts and lower molecular weight materials to pass. UF membranes are commercially used in numerous market areas for concentration, clarification and diafiltration of large process streams.

Microfiltration (MF)
20-100 psi

MF is the most open of all cross-flow filtration devices with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 3.0 microns. Typical applications include the concentration and/or clarificationof highmolecular weight species such as bacteria, yeast and molds. Recent industrial application of MF as an alternative to both "D.E." vacuum filters and high speed centrifuges provides unlimited new process opportunities.

Bristol introduces their 1-inch "I" Series Tubular Ultra filtration Membrane Module to improve the quality of water and food processing.

The "I" Series Membrane can concentrate oily wastewater, pre-concentrate whey solids for cheese production, the clarification of juices, wine and beer and recover chemicals.

These membranes are direct replacements for many OEM's and can be purchased direct from Bristol International Corp.

The "I" Series Multi-core Tubular Membrane is a 10 foot Tubular Membrane that is used primarily for E-coating, but can be used for other process streams.

Membranes are available in PVDF, PES and PS
"I" Series Tubes come in 5 foot and 10 foot lengths.
Pore sizes of 5000 to 500,000 NMWC

Wide Range of High Quality Elements

Standard spiral products include over 850 different element designs of varying molecular weight cutoffs, membrane polymers, product feed spacers, construction materials and element sizes. If you needs can not be satisfied by one of our standard products, we will custom design an element to fit your specifications.

Spiral Wound

These versatile elements are ideal for most concentration or clarification applications. They are energy efficient, compact, economical to install and allow maximum operating flexibility for most filtration processes. Their rugged construction allows excellent chemical, temperature and operating pressure flexibility. The spiral configuration allows higher membrane densities than any other design. Permeate output per horsepower is maximized.
